The hidden history

The game never tells you this in one place. Players piece it together from stones, bearers and last words, and doing that yourself is the best way to have it. If you would rather read it here, it is laid out in order.

Heavy spoilers. The last switch gives away the game's central twist, and the game saves it for the very end.
The Vanguard

The first among the Lanternbound was called the Vanguard. It carried more lights to the sea than any bearer before it, and it was loved by the Archon.

On one stormy night the Vanguard fell on the causeway, carrying someone else's light.

The night that did not end

The Archon sat the Vanguard's vigil like any other. The hour bell struck eleven. The Archon could not speak the dawn.

  • The horologists took one minute out of the world and kept it in an hourglass, the Borrowed Minute. Every clock in the abbey stopped at 11:59 and has never moved since.
  • The foundry cast ten Wake Bells to keep the morning out.
  • The observatory's engines dragged the moon across the sun and held it there, the Eclipse. They needed something heavier than any machine, so the Archon gave them its own grief, drawn out whole and sealed in a chapel: the Griefwell.
  • The scriptorium was flooded to wash the road to the sea out of the maps, the Unwritten Atlas, and the Lantern Docks were closed.
  • The First Wing of the Lanternbound obeyed and put out its own lantern. It became the Pale Interceptor, and shot down every bearer who tried to reach the sea.
  • Every servant of the Wake was given one last order: "Let no light leave." Each Guardian took up a bell.

The Archon died at last, still sitting the vigil. Its refusal did not die. It became the Eclipse Archon, "the Last Memory": what is left when the one who remembers is gone and the remembering is not.

The bearers

A Lanternbound's light is tethered to the dock where it last rested. That was meant as a kindness, so a lost bearer could always find its way back. Under the endless night it is a cage. Bearer after bearer woke at a dock, fought down through the abbey and fell. Their empty armour still hangs where they fell.

The truth (the game's central twist)

You are the Vanguard. The whole abbey is holding its night for one soul: the bearer who carried every light but its own. It wakes at the docks because the Wake will not let it go. The light it carries is the one piece of dawn that was already lit when the night stopped: its own.

The hints were there all along:

  • The Book of the Dead's last page holds one name, blotted by water, and its lamp is the only one still dry (sector 2).
  • On the Lanternbound wing roll, every name is struck through except the Vanguard's (sector 8).
  • Statues of a lantern-bearer in niches across the abbey share your silhouette.
  • The basilica's high bier is empty, with a hollow carved in the shape of your armour.
  • Corwin knows your rivets. Hesk knows the drift in how you fly.

The only way home is to let yourself be let go.
