Melee and the Parry

A melee weapon always sits beside your guns. Striking leaves you unhurt, so it is safer than it looks.

The strike

Tap toward an enemy within about 64 px. The Vanguard darts in, hits with an explosion, and springs back. Any other tap dashes instead. A dashed lilac ring round the ship shows the strike recharging.

Change your melee weapon at any Lantern Dock.

When to use it: after a boss finishes an attack and sits close, or to finish a weak enemy that is pressing you. Because you spring back out, a strike is also a way of leaving.

In Settings, Tap away from enemies can turn the dash into a Lunge that strikes whatever it passes, at reduced damage.

The Parry

Tap two fingers together, or the Parry wall button. If you give the two-finger tap another action at a dock, the wall button still parries, and you can put the Parry on the three-finger tap instead. It works with any weapon and any armour.

Timing it

The swing lasts a moment, so wait until bullets are close and bunched. Parry a whole wave as it reaches you rather than the first bullet of it. Against a ring with no safe gap, a Parry makes your own gap.

Hard to hit two fingers mid-fight? Use the wall button. You can also move it, with the others, in Settings under Button order.
